I always hear this word on t.v (csi,svu...) but i am not sure exactly what it means. is it just another word for rape? I think its a type of rape but i am not sure what type of rape it is. they only use this word in certain cases.

It's meaning fluctuates depending on who you talk to. I've seen it to refer to any sex act other than missionary and for the purpose of procreation. Currently most will tell you it refers to anal penetration. Wikipedia has a decent entry on it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodomy

The polite way to explain it is having intercourse from behind. The word itself defines a crime, however, sodomy can be consentual.

Although a term for anal sex, it also covers rape via object (broom handle, bottle, fist, etc.)

If you mean sodomize (also -ise) and I assume you do, then it means anal intercourse.
