The Twisted Window

This book is called The Twisted Window, and Lois Duncan is the author. Tracy Lloyd is a high school girl who lives with her Aunt Rene and her Uncle Cory. Her mother died recently and her father granted custody to her aunt and uncle because he was busy making a movie in Italy. Brad Johnston is a boy from Albuquerque. His father died from a heart attack a few years ago, and his mom married a guy named Gavin Brummer. Afterwards, his sister, Mindy was born. Brad thinks that she was kidnapped when she was just a few months old. Mindy will not go anywhere without her teddy bear named Bimbo. Brad’s best friend is Jamie. This book takes place mostly in Winfield, Texas. At the beginning of the book, Tracy and Brad are in Winfield High School. In Winfield, Tracy and Brad go to the Carver’s house, and that is where the trouble really starts. This book takes place in present day time period. Brad Johnson goes to Winfield to find his kidnapped little sister, Mindy. Brad suspects that Gavin, his stepfather, took Mindy. Brad goes into Winfield High School to find a girl to help him find his sister. The girl he finds is Tracy Lloyd. Tracy and Brad go to the Carver’s house where they saw Gavin and Mindy through a “twisted” window. They kidnap Mindy, but it turns out being harder than they thought it would be. Once they got Mindy, Brad, Tracy, and Mindy went to Albuquerque, where Brad planned to surprise his mom with Mindy. Tracy and Brad take turns driving, and Tracy stops a few times. Each time she stops, she gets more and more frightened. When they stop to eat breakfast, Tracy gets her biggest surprise yet. Brad’s best friend, Jamie, shows up at the restaurant and talks to Tracy. From there, the book gets more and more interesting. The Twisted Window has many great parts, but one of the best was when Tracy baby-set’s Mindy at the Carver’s house. I like this part because just when you think the kidnapping is going to be easy and they won’t have any problem, Doug Carver walks in and sees Brad in the kitchen. From there, Brad takes bigger chances by threatening Doug Carver with a gun. Since Doug Carver saw that Tracy was part of this, they locked Doug in the pantry and Tracy had no choice but go with Brad. Brad’s original plan was to get Mindy and tie up Tracy to make it look like a break-in and kidnapping that Tracy wasn’t part of. One of the other good parts in this book is when Jamie, Brad, Mindy, and Tracy are at the cabin in the Pecos. Tracy sneaks around the back of the cabin while Jamie distracts Brad on the front porch of the cabin. Tracy goes in the back door of the cabin and gets Mindy. When Brad hears a noise in the cabin, he turns around and his gun discharges, firing into the cabin. This book was very good, and there were only two things that bothered me a little. One was that the book went kind of slow in the beginning. When Brad is trying to find a girl in the high school, they talked a bit too long. One other thing that most books, like The Twisted Window, leave out is what happens to all the characters. I would have liked to know what happens to Tracy especially, because she could have gotten punished, or she could have gotten off the hook. This is what bothers me the most in books. My overall opinion of The Twisted Window is that it is a very good book, and it keeps you in suspense and reading. Some of these times include: when someone follows Tracy home; when Tracy walks through an empty park and feels like she is being watched; and when Brad and Tracy kidnap Mindy, because the chapter end in the middle of the action. At the cabin in the woods, when the gun goes off in the direction of Tracy and Mindy, the book leaves the reader hanging for a few paragraphs. This is one of the best Lois Duncan books I have read.
