Animals hibernate because winter is a tough time to survive. There is less food and colder, shorter days. An animal must either be able to survive the cold...or die. Hibernation is simply a way to survive.

Hibernation helps these animals survive in the roughest and toughest conditions. By hibernating, an animal decreases its body.s energy needs to a bare minimum. Hibernation is a process of lowering an animals body temperature and slowing down its heartbeat into order to conserve energy during times of scarcity and stress.

animals hibernate to avoid all the cold days in the winter, they wouldn't survive if they didn't. so some animals collect lots of food before hand to store say in a tree, if it was a squirrel, all animals will mostly sleep all the way through the cold months :)

They hibernate because they cannot get enough food to remain active. By dramatically lowering their metabolic rate, they can get by on much less energy.
The reason they can't get enough food is that their food source has gone dormant (if they eat plants) or migrated or gone into hibernation (if they eat land animals) or the water has frozen over and they can't get at the fish (if they eat fish).

Because you can't hibernate in the summer. Those that go to sleep for the summer aestivate.
If food is scarce or looking for it requires too much energy, it is better to slow down and go to sleep until things improve.
