A couple of years ago, I stopped by an out of town Monterrey's Little Mexico and asked if they still sold the candies (I think they were removed from the bottom of the chip basket years ago). The counter staff claimed the factory was a flood casulty of Tropical Storm Allison and would not reopen. Anyone else know if this story is true?

Monterrey's Little Mexico, Tortuga, Casa Ole, etc. is owned by Mexican Restaurants, Inc. When you call them, they don't know anything about Monterrey House Candies so I'm certain they they are either not made anymore or they are not affiliated with Monterrey's Little Mexico under the new ownership.

I remember when they used to sell their praline candies at the counter, back when they were just Monterrey House. That's when I used to buy them (they also used to put one in the bottomo of a "to go" box. There was a Monterrey House restaurant on Memorial Drive, in the Rummel Creek shopping center. I stopped buying them when the chain changed (stopped going there, too) formats. That is a possibility. Allison did a lot of damage back in June of '01, to lots of different areas of town. A lot of the food manufacturing and processing companies are around the Westpark and Beltway area, and they got 9 inches of rain that Friday night (sorry, seeing the map in my head). It is possible.

As I also remember, the parent of Casa Ole bought Monterrey's Tex-Mex in '89 or so. Problem is I can't remember that company's name. It wasn't a Tex-Mex chain, though.

As for the candies, they were just brown sugar candies like pralines, but softer. No pecan in the middle.
