they all said the correct answer however most of the time when you buy a stick of memory it is never what it says on the case.

A stick of 1 GB of RAM, most people would see around 900 and some MB of memory.

A stick of 512 MB of RAMm most are around 500 or 490 something MB of memory.

Just in case you install it and see less then what you just bought.

Very simple:

1024 bytes = 1 kilobyte
1024 kilobytes = 1 megabyte
1024 megabytes = 1 gigabyte
1024 gigabytes = 1 terabyte
1024 terabytes = 1 petabyte
