A four inch Waterford ball is enough for me. A form of an actual object, like a skull, would be distracting.

Crystal malas are generally used for increase. Skulls and bone malas are for adepts, yogis/yoginis and mahasiddhis in various rituals. I would start with refuge. Then add the wish. Then begin the various examinations and analysis of various objects of observation. Calm abiding is where you should be heading. This falls into the category of a higher training in concentration, which in the perfection vehicle necessarily comes before special insight. So, unless you are an initiate you shouldn't be doing any rituals - and if you are an initiate then you should ask your preceptor or Master because he or she should have told you all this and then you wouldn't be asking it. Find a Teacher or you will risk further delusion and then when you become thoroughly upset you will blame the Teaching when the fault lies with you.
