My moms kitchen sink will make a loud noise when the water drains out. Is this a good thing or a bad thing. She wanted me to find out.

It is a good thing! The loud sound is a sign of a clear drain!

The sucking sound is common in a sink that is far away from the main sewer if the house was built some time ago. Older homes did not require the venting systems that are in use today consequently when the sink starts to drain it produces a siphon which sucks the water out of the sink, the good news is that the drain is working well, the bad news is the siphon is probably sucking the trap-seal under the sink empty which can result in some odor entering the house. An automatic air vent can be installed to prevent this, you could consult with a plumber as to the installation, however some states frown on these devices as they require maintenance, but they are better than the alternative. If the sound starts to get louder and the kitchen starts to shake get out of the house quick, as it means the drain is starting to suck the house down the pipe. Just kidding...
There is no problem with a sucking sound on the kitchen sink, it means everything is working just fine.

Its a very good thing! It means the drain has "suction"!!! Start worrying when you don't hear that noise, that would mean its stopped up!

It is not only a good thing, it increases the market value of the house. A sink with this feature is especially appealing to single men, though nobody is sure why.
