The existence of both is fundamental to the structure of the physical universe as we know it. At this point, only God can tell us why it is that way.

All elements are constructed of atoms with a nucleus
and electrons running around them. Every thing has free electrons in it . If you force these free electrons to build up in one area, then you have created a positive charge, meaning more electron than another places. The electron abundance, called force, potential,or volts, will always try to equalize itself by going to a place with fewer electrons, or a negative charge. It's like if you had two tanks of water hooked together with a pipe on the bottom and say both filled half way with water. If you had a pump in the pipe and pumped water from one tank to the other, then shut the pump off, the water would try to run back to the tank that you pumped the water out of because of the high water pressure in the tank with the most water. Electrons work similar. Clouds are one example.
Up and down motions of air, water ,and ice, cause a
different in the abundance of free electrons. When it reaches a certain point, you have a pressure ,(electrons) , build up that causes it to try to equalize itself. lighting. which is nothing more than a massive amount of electrons trying to go to a place with a lot fewer. These same little guys run through our bodies. From our brains to our muscles. From one battery post in our cars , through wires, to electrical equipment and out to the other battery post. Hope this helps.

If you figure out the nature of nuclear weak
and strong forces and why there are complementary
charges, then see if you can bring in a theory
of gravity (which is unipolar).

Once you have done that, you have the "Theory
of everything" that Einstein died looking for,
as well as a Nobel prize in physics and fame
for life.

Particle physicists have defined how charges
work (proton, anti-proton, electron, anti-electron)
but I don't believe we have a "why" for each of
these particles.

My understanding:

When something exist and stable, they balance out (i.e: things without charges like your desk, etc.).

Positive and negative are the two extreme and can not exist stably by themselves, so there are two type. Just like there are boys and girls

cuz there are both.. but recently, scientists have found gay charges.. they are both positive and negative...
