...or do you think that we are born with fears naturally? For example- I think most people are afraid of snakes. I own a 9 foot snake, and am NOT afraid of them. Do you think we are born with this fear implanted in ourselves for survival, or did we become afraid by the protection our parents gave to us by sheltering us from such things. ( Screaming at the sight of a snake and pushing us to the side, or whathaveyou).

nature vs nurture

i personally think it's a combination - i know that i have fears that no one else in my family has. But i also know that some of my shared fears are a result of prior teaching from my parents that have been inherited throughout generations.

Although i do think that most of our fears are a result of our own direct experience (whether that is from our parents response to our experience or not)

Some are inborn, like fear of falling
some are common sense, like a reasonable fear of dangerous things
some are definitely implants. My daughter had a sitter who was unreasonably afraid of worms. Worms are harmless, it makes no sense. Anyway, my daughter picked up that fear reaction and became afraid.

Our fears come from both. For instance, I have a fear of failure because I have a parent who refused to take risk because they feared failure. However, since 9-11, I have a fear of planes while neither one of my parents do.
