I understand that there are a few minor differences in their religion, like who they wanted to be caliph (the Sunni wanted Abu Bakr and the Shia wanted Ali) but what is the REAL reason for why they are fighting? Did it have something to do with Saddam Hussein? I'm a bit unclear on the conflict.

As I understand (which isn't much) this fighting goes back thousands of years with religious implications most westerners really can't grasp because of the cutural differances and beliefs.

both tribes do not trust each other to be the next president of Iraq that can be fair to the nation as a whole
to make matters worse they are killing the head of each tribes so making negotiations for peace getting difficult

Because that is what they do /They have been fighting since the beginning of time and they always will.
