Baby rats (pups, also affectionately known as pinkies, erasers, rittens, kittens) are born hairless. Their coat starts coming in around 5 to 7 days old. A hairless baby may or may not start out with a coat and go hairless later, around 6 to 8 weeks of age.
Hairless rats are not genetically inferior, or defective, when they are bred by dedicated breeders. Zoos breed their rats en mass for animal food and this type of indiscriminate breeding is what causes the defects in the hairless rat.
If you are looking for good-quality pets, then may I suggest that you go to The Ratster http://www.ratster.com The breeders listed here breed for quality pets while endeavering to weed out the health concerns of the hairless rat.

I dug around on the Ratster and came up with this page of breeders for you.

This is a very old website that hasn't been updated in ages, a lot of broken links, but there might be some breeders here who can guide you to those hairless (nikked) rats

The breeders I can recommend from this list are:
Cove Rattery
Black Rose Rattery
Blue Velvet Rattery
Silver Fuzz Rattery
I even typed "hairless rats in Michigan" in my browser and came up with the following links

You might even find a hairless rat that needs to be rehomed?
I have had 5 hairless rats (Eve, Galen, Halen, Oliver, and Punk) from pet stores and all but Oli were plagued with health/skin issues. Oliver died of good ol' old age.

There is some special care needed for hairless rats,
http://search.yahoo.com/search?search=special+care+of+hairless+rats&ei=UTF-8&fr=ks-ans&ico-yahoo-search-value=http%3A%2F%2Frds.yahoo.com%2F_ylt%3DAqFmYLsucJ9Ju1A_wytuo5cazKIX%2FSIG%3D111gjvvgj%2F*-http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.yahoo.com%2Fsearch&ico-wikipedia-search-value=http%3A%2F%2Frds.yahoo.com%2F_ylt%3DAjrR1DDgyctRMOV346dKZz4azKIX%2FSIG%3D11ia1qo58%2F**http%253a%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FSpecial%253aSearch&p=special+care+of+hairless+rats
Hairless rats should be housed with some furry buddies to keep them warm.

Hairless rats come from breeding rex (curly haired) to rex. They have special needs, so take that into consideration. I would check out breeders, pet stores are not the best bet for specialty rats.
You can also try:
http://www.petfinder.com/
http://www.ratster.com/ (you can search for breeders who specialize in hairless)
or http://www.altpet.net/rodents/MI.shtml (listing of breeders in MI)

no clue on where you can buy them....we breed them at the zoo I work at- they are actually geneticly inferior and defective- we breed them for an easier meal for the raptors, not for pet quality.
