becuz baron is the PG. richardson is the SG. jackson is the SF. theres no room for ellis in the starting lineup nemore. but he still plays 25-35 mins a game off the bench. baron davis cant handle 48 mins a nite every nite nemore. and the warriors wanna keep him healthy so ellis will still b a big factor everynite.

Monta Ellis is a great young player, on many teams he would be a starting PG, but the Warriors have Barron Davis. I know that Barron has a problem with injuries but when he is in he is one of the league leaders in assists and steals and he also has the ability to score 20 PPG. A player like that you cannot bench for Monta, at least not yet. As for why they do not start him at shooting guard, I think it is his size. Monta is a fast guy but if Monta was a SG starter the Warriors would have a very small back court and would get crushed on the defensive end when they play teams like Utah, Houston, L.A., and Pheonix. He is a good player, but I think these are the reasons why he is not starting. The final reason I can come up with as to why Monta is 6th man is it seems like a trend is starting in the NBA that having a sixth man that could easily be a starter is very benificial ( two examples are Manu Ginobli and Ben Gordon). When it is time to rest a player like Davis, you not only have a fresh, well rested player to come off the bench, but you also have a very good player to come off the bench as well. With Monta as a bench PG, you do not loose alot when your starter has to sit, this leads to the opponent not having the ability to rest their PG or a horrible mis match when Monta gets to play against the opponents bench PG. This I must note helps Monta get much better numbers and also may help in his development in the NBA.

Because you have former all-starts in Jason Richardson and Baron Davis ahead of him. In that type of situation it's better for him to come off the bench as the 6th man when he can have the ball more. Plus Ellis has issues turning the ball over.

Ellis is a combo guard, valuable at playing both guard positions. He's too short and weak to play full time shooting guard, and he lacks the vision and creativity for teammates that Baron Davis has at point. Although Ellis is obviously talented enough to start, off the bench scorer is a more appropriate position for him.
