My friend described the woman he has been seeing in these words: "She isn't greatly built or what would be considered beautiful---she is nice looking but in a plain beauty way."

I am not sure its a little confusing. It doesn't sound like an insult but it also doesn't sound like a compliment either.

There are lots of women who fit that description in my mind.
Not beautiful or even pretty in a movie star way, but they have a sweet heart, kind eyes and a 'glow' in them.
It's way more about personality than it is looks.
He sounds like a great guy,too.

i would say he is looking at the inside instead of just the outer beauty like most men do

it sounds to me like he thinks shes beautiful.....but not in the way media tells us.....
