It all started way back in the olden days of the NHL when some players didn't shave on game day because the cold air irritated their clean-shaven faces.
The current NHL "playoff" beard, is rumoured to have been started in the early 1980's by the New York Islanders.
A lot of NHL players are very superstitious and eat only a certain thing on game day, put their right skate on first, left sock on first etc. My all-time favourite goaltender, (Patrick Roy) would never skate over the blue or red lines during his pre-game skate. (He also used to talk to his posts, claiming they were his friends......but superstition isn't the word I'd use for that lol.)
There have also been accounts of tennis player Björn Borg that used to grow a beard whenever he went to Wimbledon. Regardless....we now see playoff beards in the NBA, NFL and NBA........ask Mike Bossy...he may know the true origin.

The players are singlemindedly focused on the task at hand; such cosmetic things as a clean-shaven face are meaningless. A lot of the married ones sleep on the couch the whole playoff run!

Before the league expansion into the southern hemisphere, (and Al Gore warming), it was really cold where they played Hockey. By the time they got to the playoffs, they couldn't feel their chins. Ex lumberjacks, who played Hockey in the winter, started growing beards to insulate their chins. Also, due to cheap shots, many of them were wanted in the towns they had to play in in the playoffs. The beards were disguises.
