Why not shorter women? I'm curious...

When a designer showcases a dress for its fabric, they want the model to show the garment as flowing, and show the movement, which you won't get with a shorter model. It's just all about what the model makes the dress look like.

the model makes the dress, the dress doesn't make the model so to speak.

I wish though, I'm 5'4" and would love the opportunity to model lol

Read this link. It is informative about why tall women are in the fashion industry. http://www.newmodels.com/height.html
I am short as well, 5'4" tall, Just think, those women that have to be super skinny, super gaunt, waif, have no or little self-esteem for themselves. They are controlled by the industry, how they should look, how much they should weigh, what they should eat, some do illegal drugs. But, slowly some industries are taking into considerations of different types of fashion shows, like for petite or teens...I hope one day in the fashion industry they try and create everyone equal, after all people wear their clothes.

The fashion (modeling trend started in the early 1920's...

Tall, lean women show off the designers clothing in the most impressive way, that's why tall is the standard.

I agree with Chatnoir, this 'fashion standard' was probably just an attempt at dramaticism.

Why it begun is another thing entirely. Probably also derived from the fashion industry, taller women we're probably seen as 'exotic' and therefor camera worthy. Moreover the movements of a tall person are much more fluid.

Personally I dig short chicks, and I refuse to pay attention to fashion. I think it's an anchor on todays society and completely detramental to womens views of themselves, and mens views of women.

some ppl think taller is more attrative (which is not entirely true seeing as iam short myself) maybe its the obsession of the PERFECT human body. some ppl (like fashion designers and the media) seem to think that the best type of body (in women) is very tall, very thin and very gaunt.

It depends on how old you are. I model and I am 14 and 5'5. But when you are older and doing high fashion brands on the runway they are going to want you to be 6'0 just because they are longer and leaner.
