yes, if the sockets are the same, the CPU will work in the condition that the motherboard can handle the voltage, multiplier, and Front Side Bus (FSB) settings required by that chip.
Locate the Model and / or Serial number from the board. (usually printed in white somewhere by a copyrite date) Go the manufacturers website and look up compatability issues know with your mobo.
In most cases, a new chip comes out later than a complient mobo, so a bios upgrade will most likly be necessary. Consult your mobo's manufacturer about proper ways to "flash your bios."
Sounds like fun! enjoy

As long as the new processor is socket 939 it will go in and work whether it is single or dual core. AMD has the chipset controller built in to the processor where the Intel processors have to rely on a compatable motherboard chipset. (All socket 939 processors should work on all 939 mobo's) It may require a bios update at the very most. The bonus is that 939 processors are dropping in price and going quickly with the introduction of socket AM2.

Don't believe so. I think the new athlon x2's use the AM2 socket... well at least mine does. I have an athlon x2 5200+ Windsor and it only fits the AM2... Check to make sure. I'd suggest buying from newegg instead though because u run the risk of ESD if the seller doesn't know how to ship it correctly.

If your board supports a 939 socket you can plug in any 939 socket processor.....
What is you computer model, or motherboard model?

Well I am not sure about the desktop, but I know I can't do it on my laptop! The new x2 processors use an AM2 socket that is different then what my laptop uses. I already contacted compaq and they told me I was out of luck!

Acutally, i assumed, and characteristic constantly equipped desktops alongside the lines of, sdoes the mobo help the reminiscence. i know 3 CPU's are finicky yet, why might some one build a board that the CPU does not play advantageous with the reminiscence? and the board seems to assist DDR and not DDR2 reminiscence
