You can download a free version. Or you can pay for a membership. The pay version allows one to purchase things for the game. My school is actually considering purchasing a whole "island" in order to create a virtual hang out spot for students. Sorry that's all the info I have. I know that there is a document on the site that explains it better

Second Life is a virtual role-playing game. It's a lot like the Sims in that you get to chose your own character and change his or her appearance. But that's pretty much where the similarities end. You interract with other people online through their characters as well.

To get started, you download the client from their website, which creates a shortcut on your desktop. There is no need to purchase anything unless you want to use your Paypal account to buy virtual money which you can use to buy tools for you Second Life character.

I tried it, but it took up a lot of space on my computer and crashed a lot. Maybe it has progressed since then. Good luck!

I played way back when it was still in beta. It is pretty much a Sims game but where you can own land, build houses or stores. If your creative enough you can build your own furniture, make clothes and such. I know when I played they gave classes on how to build stuff.
Also you can vote on peoples property. You also get a "weekly paycheck" to help with some of your expenses. I believe it came from how poplar you are and votes on your property and such. Not 100% sure on that tho since its been so long. But you can play online with friends and family, go to others shops, visit homes. You can even throw parties for people.
If I remember correctly I do not believe there is any charge for the game to buy but there is a monthly charge you pay to play or you can pay like $200 (dont remember the exact price) to play for lifetime or life of the game.

Hope this helps!

It's free. Just download it and go. It's like a virtual world with other people floating around, but most, if not all, of the areas there have been built by people like you and me.
