Because they are.. I live in Houston Texas and they closed down AstroWorld and WaterWorld a couple years ago. I've heard a lot of rumors of other parks closing as well. I don't think they can afford their land due to the steep price of the land.

The company cannot afford to run all the parks it has opened in recent years. You may not realize this, but Six Flags caters to local markets, and there's only a few Six Flags theme parks that are big enough actually attract a larger audience outside of its locals in the area. Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, CA being the company's biggest asset.
For a while, they were opening up smaller parks around the country and large parks around the world until the company just got too saturated and the brand got spread too thinly to keep up with the industry competition from Disney, Universal, Cedar Fair, Paramount, and other theme park operators.
All the above companies I mentioned have been able to afford to offer something new and exciting every summer to keep the crowds rolling through their gates, where as Six Flags simply could not do that in every single one of their parks. There was just too many. In turn, people went to the Six Flags parks in smaller and smaller numbers, forcing them to simply close down the parks they couldn't afford to keep running or the ones that were not turning out a profit.
Basically, the company's trying to avoid bankruptcy.

They aren't. They are SELLING parks because they have a multi-billion dollar debt from their large scale buying spree in the late 90s and early 00s. They sold 7 parks in 2006, ALL of which are continuing operation. They did close down Six Flags Astroworld in 2005 but it was in desperate need of renovation and the price of the renovations was going to exceed that of what Six Flags was going to make by closing the park down. Most of the Astroworld rides have been shipped off to other Six Flags properties though.
