Well I took the promotion at work today, but I have others that may tell me not to b/c the mgr. is difficult. I know I should not let those remarks keep me from trying but i also know that It is more of a challenge but I can do it.
They already have a position and it p.o's me of when they try to scare me. Has anyone ever done that to you.

Sure have. I currently am a graphic artist for the military. However before that, I was in security forces. I knew that I didn't want to do that for my whole service, so when I found out about my current position, I applied for a retrain. Lots of people were very encouraging, but there were a select few who told me since security was a critical job and low manned, I would not be allowed to retrain into the job I wanted, but would go to another critical job. I listened to them respectfully, nodded every once in a while, and decided to prove them wrong.

Ultimately, they aren't the ones who will regret a lost or disregarded chance. The world is in need of people who are willing to test the boundaries to find better ways, new inventions, new ideas.

The patent office of the 18th or 19th century believed that everything that was to be created was already made. Nothing new would or could be made. Imagine where we would be if everyone believed that.

Now as for your new manager, find out for yourself. Have you ever been the subject of gossip? Wouldn't you want someone to know the truth about you rather than what joe schmoe made up about you? Maybe the two of you will make a great team. Maybe the "others" don't want more competition and this is their way of accomplishing it.

If you are wrong and those others are right, at least you found out for yourself and won't have to keep asking yourself, "What if I did this?" If they are wrong, its better for you to prove it to them yourself, then to have someone else, in what should have been your position , prove it to them.

You know some people are like lobsters in a lobster tank. You know how one almost manages to escape... well the others will pull him back down.
Go for it if you think you can do it. Those are just a bunch of scared chicken littles. If I had listened to all of them I would have never become anything. (these included my parents saying stuff was too risky too hard etc)
Listen only to yourself you knwo what you can do. Let us know How it ended up

It is beneficial for you to decide matters for yourself. Many people make the mistake of "jumping to conclusions" - particularly about others without ever taking the time to verify the assumptions they bring to their judgements.

They'll swear they're doing you a favor by "tipping you off" about their judgements. More likely, they're looking to vicariously validate their judgements by having the satisfaction of seeing you observe their judgement.

Fear not. Take life as it comes. Find the silver lining whenever things don't go as expected.

To assist you, review Dr. David Burns's FEELING GOOD book - particularly the 10 cognitive distortions that people (who tend to upset themselves) engage in.

Oh yeah... I'm still working on my degree and whenever I tell people what I want to major in they tell me not too because it doesn't make a ton of money. I tell them I want to do something I love but they insist that money is what makes life happy. It really ticks me off. Don't listen to them, they might be jealous and who knows... maybe you'll hit it off with your new mngr.

Congratulations on your promotion! That's fantastic! And of course you can do it. I don't understand how people benefit from being so negative to others. So sad.

Yes, I had a family member that always tried to "hold me back/down". They failed.
