Try the 'Apply Settings Without Restarting' option.

It sounds like you need to update the drivers for your graphics card. Go to the website of your computer's (or graphics card's) manufacturer, and find your model. The drivers will be a free download. Install them, and restart your PC, and that should fix the problem.

A little info on what caused this to happen in the first place would help as well.

The more likely of the two is that you need a new "driver"

A driver tells the computer's operating system (windows XP) how to interact with the monitor. Drivers may be found all over the net. try "driverguide.com"

one of three problems
(1) you have not got the right graphics driver installed
(2) your graphic card is not got the right resolutions or color depths which are 16 bit, 24 bit, 32 bit
(3) your monitor will not go to a higher resolution

Sounds like you have a bad video card driver. Try updating it and see what happens.

no way to know without knowing your OS at least...but with winxp you shouldnt have to restart when changing res unless your video card is a total pile of crup...

Try hitting "Apply" first, then "OK" then restart.
