So much the future they predict has arrived. And it was Big Brother who stands out in my mind. The voice that directed the thought police and the media.

If these books were popular at the time of their publication, there must have been a similar feeling at the time that state was being a bit too 'orwellian'
Include 'The Crucible' on your book list, and then remember that Arthur Miller was actually put in front of McCarthy.
Therefore I deny that Orwell and Huxley predicted our future. What they do is magnify elements of the government in the form of an obvious fiction in order to give us mental and rhetorical tools to discuss themes within the books and our lives.
There are always elements like this in the government, Sparta declined and McCarthyism declined. Now we've got the term 'Orwellian' to use in identifying the trends, but any such current trends won't be followed out to such an nth degree.
1984 will be censored out of the public consciousness well before 1984 arrives.

I don't think many people will disagree with you on this one. Orwell's 1984 should be required reading for every human being (and if they don't want to read it, then we'll lock 'em up 'til they do...ha ha).

PS recommend these books to your friends...man!
