I agree with the others here I have done the same and it works. How ever another thing you can try is to save it as a draft every so often then reopen it from your draft folder and continue on with it. It can be a hassle but it works.

If your writing long emails, do it in a word processor. Set the autosave to every few minutes. When complete, cut and paste into your email agent and send.

If you lose the document, there should be an autosave that you can go back to and rewrite the last few minutes vice the whole document.

No you can't. Type them in Microsoft Word and copy and paste to your email when you're done. Also, if you get a Gmail email account from Google it will save for you automatically.
