Oxidation:

Cu ---> Cu2+ + 2 e

Reduction:

NO3- + 3 e + 4 H+ ---> NO + 2 H2O

Overall:

3 Cu + 2 NO3- + 8 H+ ---> 3 Cu2+ + 2 NO + 4 H2O

1.)assign axidation states to see which atoms are gaining electrons and which are loosing them.
2.) divide the equation into to half rections, one for oxidation and one for reduction.
3.) balance everything except oxygen
4.) balance O with H2O, balance the H with H+
5.) if you have to add these half equations together then put them together and cancel out what is the same on both sides....tada!!
5.) balance the rest by adding electrons as needed
