do those same people also think that their personal identification number should be called a PIN number? My theory is that these people hear words and don't understand the meaning as in PIN already has an N representing the word number. Another example Is ATM not ATM macine etc...

no, those are different people.
/These Acronyms used to have a period after each letter , but now most all do not and people use them as a word without actually spelling it all out to wee what it spells.
It is called lazy , not ignorant. Ignorant people know something and choose to ignore it.
