Not sure I know anybody that makes those correlations, except for a cynic perhaps. A cynic will view optimism as ignorant foolishness. Philosophically, the cynic is mistaken. It makes more sense to be an optimist.

Because it so happens that most of human life is actually rather negative. After all, most of it is a struggle to stave off the inevitable end. However, happiness and optimism make the struggle worth living, so it isn't so stupid after all.

Maybe it's because so few people nowadays are happy, optimistic, and perky(?)

Lots of people assume that being happy means you're ignorant of everything wrong that's going around you, and that you must be naieve or too young (at least in mind) to understand tragety.

I'm not sure I would correlate 'stupid' with 'happy' or 'optimistic'. Maybe with 'Bush' or 'American' though....

because if they had any sense they would be depressed and scared sensless with all that is going on in the world today.
