Could you tell me why you are being stereotypical? I'm a teenager and I HATE shopping! It is all about things, not ideas. I go to the mall maybe five times a year, and even that is overwhelming. Why does it even matter?

Though we grow we never overcome the childish curiosity , ever. remember the way you moved from one toy to another? You used one for while and went for another? But, then , in those days you depended on someone else - mother- to buy for you.

Comes a time in life where you ahve the same curiosity and some money to spend. There is thrill, doing something without your mother telling you what to do and FIRST TIME as teenager you start taking decisions in life. You get a sort of internal satisfaction and a firm belief;" here I am taking my life in my hands" . It is this vulnerable time that the teenagers shop alot and , fall prey to the media and the advertisers blitz to lap up anything that is remotely fascinating.

remember the darker side. It is also the time for the teenagers to take more , not so moral, drastic decisons on things like teenage sex, drugs , alcohol, cigarettes....For these newcomers there is no difference between a new dress and cigarette .oth seem to give a sense of thrill and pseudo freedom.

Maybe it is similar to why some women might shop a lot (plus most teenagers who shop a lot are probably moreso female) - that it gives them a sense of power (for lack of a more 'positive' word). They get to make decisions. It can also be a social thing- teenagers aren't supposed to go out drinking and stuff so they hang out at the mall, where there are also often movie cinemas. Also just to look at all the pretty things!

It's a form of independence. When you're a teen, you want more freedom. Going shopping with friends is a way to show that their supposedly "grown up." Just like every teen MUST go to Starbucks, otherwise they're childish. Well, that's how people at my school act anyways.

Sorry, I'm beginning to rant. I apologize.

But like someone said above, it can be a lot of fun, usually only when you know what you're looking for. Otherwise, it's challenging and hard.

Peace be to all.

I will attempt to answer the question as best as I possibly can referring solely to teens living in contemporary American Culture and Society.

Teens want to shop very mush because...

First of all because they are looking for something...and I do not refer to a simple new pair of sneakers. I am referring to something much more deeper than that. Teens, along with every human being on this planet, are looking for the fulfillment of knowing why they exist. They are looking for a purpose. They are looking to fill a giant void that is within them. This void that creates a desire in them to be a part of something, to be recognized, to be complete.

Teens who are living in America have been bombarded with image after image of what is “cool.” They have been shown in the movies whom they should try to be like. They have seen thousands of commercials and advertisements throughout their life time telling them exactly what products they need and why they cannot exist without them.

Teen are living in a reality which consists of an existential dilemma in which they are all attempting to find out exactly who and what they are. The quickest remedy and solution that they are taught from a very early age is to go and buy something that will make them happy-something that will finally make them complete. Materialism has become a new “false god” living among the people of these times. This has happened especially in places like America because it has become so easy for teens to acquire material wealth and possessions. Teens have become addicted to shopping, just as they would to any other substance. In shopping they forget their true needs and necessities by focusing on the superficial.

The paradigm that has been instilled in the minds of our dear young people is that to be complete in this life you must have all of the things that you are told are absolutely necessary. But this is not something that most people even notice. Some would say.. ”I shop because I need new clothes.” Others would say “I shop because I have been waiting for this thing to be out for a long time.”
But why are they really shopping? Do they really need a pairs of skate shoes that are $80-120? Do they really need the new videogame system that is $300-500?

They shop because we have allowed fall into the misconception that to be happy you must shop. Let us all attempt to fix this situation together.

Peace be to all.

Hey there! I'm 17 so I think I qualify to answer this accurately. It varies from person to person but a lot of us are trying to get comfortable with who we are. So girls will get new outfits that will "make them look prettier" or guys will get new gadgets that will "make them cooler". But after a few times showing off that skirt or ipod then it doesn't seem enough because someone's always got something better than what you have so you have to go out and buy something new! It's a self confidence booster. Plus humans in general are never satisfied and this is just our first taste of that desire to fill that big empty space.

They don't. The major shoppers are middle aged ladies. Let's be real, teens do not have the money and financial pull and credit to really do all of the shopping that you speak of. Your "question" smells of more youth stereotyping--and stereotypes are something that we can all do without. It is a new day my friend.

They have a lot of disposable income, in the form of parents.

because its one of the best ways to spend time outside of home. and also, when you include friends in it, its the nicest way to get closer to them cause you have one thing in common with that friend of yours.
