Because there are enough people who take their politics way too seriously. If person A lets Person B know they support candidate/philosophy/party etc C and Person B is on the opponent's side then person B can get real obnoxious.

Some people are reasonable about differences but some do not know when to quit.

I have a good friend. We are on opposite sides of the political spectrum. I try to avoid topics political with him and it seems he reciprocates. He isn't convincing me and I am not convincing him.

There is a reason politics is one of the things you don't bring up in "polite company".

A lot of people don't really have a definite political opinion, because, to be honest with you, if political party A did something stupid, I wouldn't want to be incorporated with them, but I don't agree with political party B's standpoints, and some people, by the election time, just vote for the lesser of the 2 evils.

Here are three possible reasons:

1. A person's political preference is often complicated, and people do not like being put into categories.

2. Fear of scorn from friends, family, and strangers whose views are much different.

3. Depending on their political beliefs, they may be in physical danger in certain circumstances, or in danger of losing their job.

Political preference, like religion is very personal and although many feel free to discuss the latest political scandal or the newest candidate running for office will not discuss their real inner feelings/thoughts on the subject. It is what it is, and should be respected.
