The neuron releases its vesicles into the synaptic cleft. The neurotransmitters migrate and bind to the receptor sites on the next neuron. If the stimulus is adequate, it causes depolarization of the post-synaptic neuron. Then the neurotransmitters are degraded or eliminated by re-uptake into the pre-synaptic neuron. And the pre-synaptic neuron repolarizes.
