Stalin was alot worse than Hitler was. This can not even be argued. Did you know when Stalin gave a speech someone had to ring a bell to end the applause when he was finished? That was because people were afraid to be the first to stop applauding since they may be viewed as traitors and exectued. Or even worse, become a goulag (basically a slave labourer).
There are two main reasons Hitler is known as Worst. At the time, global politics dictated that what happened in your own country was your own problem (obviously not so today). Many of the millions whom Hitler sent to death were from conquered countries, particularly Poland and Austria.
Stalin was also on the winning side of the crisis.

I think it has a lot to do with knowledge. Stallin's atrocities were not as well known at the time and the Russian people didn't go screaming to the rest of the world "Look at what he is doing to us!" The Jewish people made their plight known to the world and a war was fought to free them, among other things. Those who follow history and read up on these things know the truth. Stallin executed almost three times as many Russian people as Hitler did Jewish people, but both were egocentric maniacs who believed that they could exterminate anyone who stood in their way.
Stallin was a more proficient murderer, but they were equally evil men.

Hitler killed a lot more than the 6 million Jews, for one thing. Over 11 million Soviet civilians were murdured by the Nazi's in just under 3 years, as well as over 3 million Soviet POW's. So take the 6 million, add the 11 million, and the 3 million, and it's now a tie in terms of who killed the most, and there is still more to add to Hitlers total.
More importantly, Hitler was stopped, Stalin wasn't. Hitler. would easily have killed over 100 million people if he could.
And finally, while I would never argue that Stalin's ends justified his means, in terms of looking at how evil he was in comparison to Hitler, it matters. Stalin killed 20 million people in an attempt to bring a country just leaving the middle ages into the industial age. Hitler killed 20+ million in an attempt to kill over 100 million people and wipe entire races and cultures off the planet.
Stalin was horrible, but lets not kid ourselves, Hitler was in a class all to himself when it comes to evil.

I don't know that Hitler is still seen as worse. A few decades ago, before the extent of Stalin's terror was known, views might have been different. Scholars have better access to records and information now than they did in the 1940s and 1950s. Robert Conquest's book "The Great Terror" is an essential resource on Stalin and his purges.

Few words of what really happened in Russia made it out until way after Stalin's death - it was all hush hush. By the time it became widely known, Stalin was no longer a newsworthy figure.
The other reason is Stalin wasn't a racist. He didn't care who he killed. Genocide always makes people more horrified than mass murder (I'm not saying one is morally better than the other, but that's just how the press, and a lot of people react).

Stalin's reputation is not so squeaky clean. Remember, too, that the full extent of Stalin's atrocities took many years to be discovered by the rest of the world, during which time Hitler came and went and left his horrible legacy.

To paraphrase Eddie Izzard - it's okay if you kill your own people. When Hitler started killing those in other countries (the Jewish populations of France, Poland etc...)...he won best evil murdering dictator. That and Stalin had more secrecy surrounding his actions.
Stalin also was driven by his quest for political power - he killed to attain and retain his position. Hitler killed for truly insane reasons of racial/religious hatred.

Because of the way it was done. Oftentimes it is not what is done it is the WAY it is done. The way he set aside jews and plucked them out to be exterminated simply for being Jewish was horrid. I am glad that I live where I live and in this very moment that we are alive today. Old people crow on and on about "the good old days" but they were only good for certain types of people. The new generation is more accepting of those who are different and less tolerant of discrimination. We are blessed to be alive now my friend, we truly are.

Well, Hitler killed 12 million people deemed anti-social or unfavorable. Hitler was trying to exterminate, Stalin was not. Hitler killed in harsh conditions considered worse than torture. Hitler left millions more starving and in less than basic conditions. Hitler imprisoned and left almost dead or dead more than 20 million people.

Hitler was the main leader of the troops. He planned the whole action and was the one in most control. He killed just because- not only because of defence.
