I have no idea!!! To me it makes no sense, especially when you really can get a good simple look together in 5 minutes (okay mine takes way longer but only because I'm a perfectionist about how I look!). I agree with you totally. Makeovers that involve putting makeup on women who don't wear it are so dramatic and the results really are a very polished and more sophisticated, younger look.
Though I'll never understand it and think it's tragic to not do everything you can to look your best, here are some reasons (some excuses) I've heard from women who choose not to wear makeup:
1) Some feminists believe that beauty is purely natural, doesn't need any improvement and women should be appreciated solely for their natural physical beauty. These types of feminists often also believe that the beauty-industry is just one way that men oppress women since many cosmetic companies are either owned or ran on higher-levels by some males. And that the pressure society and our economy/advertising put on women to use cosmetics is just another way to fuel the "oppression" by males and keep women down.
2) The idea that beauty is entirely natural, should be appreciated as such and doesn't need to be tampered with and can't be improved upon since it is natural. (But hey, you can have the most beautiful golf course in the world but if you don't cut the grass & trim the hedges it's not going to look as beautiful as it could.)
3) They don't have time. Let's face it, almost every modern woman (whether high-powered executive, secretary, stay-at-home mom or socialite) is insanely busy with work, school, and social life/obligations, usually a combination of all three. But most (noteably, the more successful ones) MAKE the time to put on a face of makeup. This last reason seems to be more of a cop-out and an excuse than an actual reason to me. You'll never FIND time to do anything. You have to MAKE it. But I think we can all make 5 minutes for something that makes you feel 5000% better about yourself and increases confidence & self-esteem.
So while some women may claim political/social reasons for not wearing makeup, most I think cite lack of time as the excuse. But it should be noted that even Ms. Liberal Feminist herself Hilary Clinton took time out of her busy schedule to have a complete makeover done! Certainly in order to appeal to the public more. It's been scientifically proven that attractive people are more successful than unattractive people, probably due to the increased self-esteem & confidence looking good and KNOWING you look good gives you. She still looks like a man, bless her heart. But a much better looking man. She's got a long way to go, but it's definitely an improvement! And I'm sure it will help her public image a little bit.
And for the women who "don't have time," the bottom line is: It doesn't have to be elaborate. Even just concealer/foundation, blush, shadow, lil mascara & lipgloss can work WONDERS! And they'd probably even get more done in their lives because you function better, more effectively when you feel you look good. So really I can't come up with a *valid* reason here, just excuses (because I wholeheartedly agree with you!). But I hope these answers gave you some insight and helped to answer your question some.
And remember ladies: Be a glamour girl...Put on your lipstick!

Some people don't really care (and that is there right) if they look polished or younger, some women are more 'masculine' than others, some people are literally unaware of how good it will make them look, some people don't have the time, some people have skin that is so sensitive that they really can't, some people can't afford it, and some people hate the feeling of it on their skin.
Hope I covered everything!
I myself am a makeup lover though, and a total before and after junkie as well.

some of us dont wear make up because we dont need it, it may be hard for some of you to understand, but there are natural beauties out there with such awesome skin that adding makeup will make them look dull, trashy and fake, as some of you answerers here end up looking like with all the makeup.
i have plenty of time even though i work and socialise, but i truly dont need makeup. i have naturally smooth, pimple free skin, with no blemishes. i have an even tone and i actually have naturally pink cheeks.
so all i ever use, to glam up, even for a wedding is eyeliner, mascara and lipstick.
foundation would cover my glowy healthy skin and pink cheeks, so i dont use that crap.
and eyeshadow would not really make a difference, plus i have really looong eyelashes. so no need.
i think its all the ignorant ones, without natural beauty who cant understand why some of us dont need the makeup 'help' that they need. And so they tell us that we are lazy or have too many feminist views thats why we dont use makeup.
makeup is to hide your flaws, and make you look nice, but if you have no flaws (yes, all you cynical people, some people really do have flawless skin) why use the makeup?
by the way, no offence to the person who asked this question, my tone was directed to some of you who live in a one dimensional world, void of smooth skin and flushed cheeks.

I commend women who go without makeup. I didn't start wearing foundation until I was 18 and looking back I wish I never would've started cuz it made me break out and now I have to wear the darn stuff all the time. Why can't a woman look beautiful in her natural skin? Men don't wear makeup and it's perfectly acceptable. Just doesn't seem fair to me.

There're some women appreciate the natural beauty that God gave to them as a gift. Some don't like makeups because makeups have some side effects like allergies. Using makeups too much will also make them look older and fake. Also, when they get old, their skin will look very aged with wrinkles and freckles...

well, if your talking about those makeover shows, i expect the actually PURPOSELY choose those women, so the impact will be greater once they are all made up. But in reality, lots of wome just dont have the time and energy to deal with it. Besides, there are also those who just get darn frustrated by looking for the "right makeup" and give up.

Well most women do not like looking to made up all the time, maybe your running into this women in the mall or the market, store, gas station. But it doesn't mean they don't want to look absolute their most.
Most women like myself are casual at work or other places i mentioned above, but when going out to an night club, party or any social gathering its an eye opener, we like to look our best and friends get impressed how total deck out we look.
If we look that way everyday then, it would only be boring.

Some women think they look beautiful the way they are. No one in my family wears make-up and my fiance thinks that my family is filled with beautiful people. I'm happy no one in my family wears make-up b/c it made me happy with the way I look. Most women who wear make-up eventually start to need it b/c they think they look as good w/o it. I started wearing foundation for about 6 months and I had to stop because I felt like I wasn't appreciating my natural beauty anymore.

Maybe some women don't want/need to. Besides, it's not healthy for the skin to wear makeup everyday. If they're just running a few errands, maybe they don't think it's worth it to spend the time putting makeup on. We don't always have to try to impress others.

this is because of the fact of adult men. adult men want youthful girls persons. women persons age, like all and sundry does. yet they want to stay youthful finding, so they do drastic issues like practice makeup each and every morning for a one million/2-hour and get elegance surgical operation performed and pass to the dermatologist and get epidermis treatments...the record is quite countless. women, youthful girls persons, and ladies persons are all held to impossible standards. Magazines with photoshopped "women persons" (very nearly nevertheless babies, many actually are babies) on them and ladies persons in the genuine international who get elegance surgical operation performed all upload as much as this loopy prevalent the place each and each element that's human and genuine approximately you is kept away from and lined up. makeup *would desire to* be approximately improving what you clearly have. regrettably, few human beings cope with it as such, through societal pressures and the media. often, nonetheless, a woman wears makeup because of the fact adult men does not provide her a 2nd look if she did not. a minimum of not previous a definite age. yet, even then, youthful girls (10! eleven! each and every so often youthful!) sense that they'd desire to placed on makeup to slot in because of the fact different women are wearing it. that's my clarification. desire it enlightens you. The sociology of makeup is an prolonged tale that began an outstanding longer time in the past and its subject concerns proceed to adapt and alter as our international is progressively extra modernized and a number of different extra avenues are opened for women persons to alter how they look.
