What are the symptoms of a bad pickup coil? My car is hard to start and idles rough, other than that, it does fine. I have replaced almost everything else. It is a 1989 thunderbird.

Well you just stated most of the problems. First try replacing the ignition module on the distributor. To replace the pick-up in the distributor, your in for fun. The module is (most of the time) the first to go.

I agree with DRY Lab, most likely the module, especially if the car has more than 80K on it.

…and scroll down below the chart that appears. Read and follow the instructions for retrieving the Diagnostic Trouble Codes.
You don't really need the meter. Make the jumper wire connection, and sit in the driver's seat and watch the "Check Engine" light. It will flash the codes to you.
If you miss one or if you aren't sure about one, turn the key off for > 30 seconds and start over again.
With the codes in hand, refer to a QUALITY repair manual for proper DIAGNOSTICS. Perform the diagnostic routine(s) and make indicated repairs. Don't automatically assume that a code indicates a failed component. It merely indicates a circuit or system to test and investigate.
