Do quasars have anything in common with binary star systems?

No. It's thought that a quasar is a stellar object that may become a galaxy if it accumulates mass...in essence, it is super-dense, and pulls in nearby stars, planets, and other objects. A quasar would "eat" a binary star system were it nearby.
