What the heck did the Japanese girl in the movie have to do with anything? I get the connection (her father's gun was the one the Morrocan boys used to shoot the tourist) and consider myself a well educated movie-goer, but I just didn't "get" the symbolism. For you out there who did, can you explain it to me?

Here's my take:

The entire movie is about a lack of communication (the biblical story of Babel is about how God gave men different native tongues). People are unable to understand or communicate with one another because of different reasons (language barriers, emotional barriers). What can be a better example of this than a young woman who can't communicate at all. She has the emotional baggage of her mother's death and her father's indifference. She also has the language barrier because she is a deaf/mute. She feels entirely disconnected even among her family and friends. Every character faces isolation in some way or another. And her character is most poignantly isolated.

Like the tale of Babel from the Bible, "Babel" is approximately the concern of human communique, however despite the fact that the reviews spread in 4 nations and in 5 languages — English, Arabic, Spanish, Japanese and signal language — language is a ways from the important barrier. Instead, the movie explores the methods where cultural assumptions and biases have a tendency to difficult to understand fact even if fact is apparent, and the best way our perceived variations hold us from discovering a human connection to yet another.

the whole movie was about people trying to communicate with each other. The Japanese girl was deaf, so it was difficult for her to communicate with those who were not deaf.
