I really got into how the Matrix took on the question of whether robots that could learn and had a human-comparable brain could take over the world or not. In the movie, of course, they do. But in real life, the question is brought up: could a robot learn to love or hate? The book and movie I, Robot, also addresses this question. Whether or not robots would take over and learn emotions, we cannot really predict. It all depends on so many factors that the robot experiences. If a robot really had a human-comparable brain center, they would, in sense, develop as a human does. They would take experiences and apply them to their life.

I hate to spoil, but the end of the Matrix: Revolution answers the question for that movie. The robot brain speaking with Neo explains most of the questions the movie presents, in that case. What the robot explains is for me to know and for you to find out. I'm not one ot spoil movies.

In summary, the question of a robot-lead takeover in the important question the Matrix presents.

The popular answer is the "perceived reality" question, the obvious off-shoot from Plato's allegory of the Cave and Rene Descartes mind manipulating demon.

The matrix ushers in something more then this to pop culture; The Perversions of Technology and what I call the Hostile Symbiotic Relationship of Cyborgism. - This was a major part of my Masters thesis, but basically its this simple idea: Technology, we can't live free with it, we can't feel complete without it.

I think that the most major Idea that is presented in the Movie is how we should be different.. you know think outside the box....we should explore all of the things that we are actually capable of doing and we should go for it....We should let great opportunities pass us by just because we are the only ones that may see the opportunity for what it can become.... :) The movie truly applies to all aspects of life... letting you know that nothing is impossible..... IF YOU BELIEVE...

The unreality of so-called reality.

This is more easily understandable if one considers the actual scale of the components of an atom. If one takes into account the fact that the neutrons, protons and electrons of an atom actually have huge spaces between them it becomes clear that the atoms that make up seemingly solid objects are made up of 99+ percent empty space.

This alone does not seem too important till you add the idea that the atoms that make up seemingly solid objects are more of a loose conglomeration that share a similar attraction but never really touch each other.

At first glance this does not really seem relevant, but closer analysis reveals that this adds a tremendous amount of empty space to solid objects that are already made up of atoms that are 99 percent space. When so-called solid objects are seen in this light it becomes apparent that they can in no way be the seemingly solid objects they appear to be.

We ourselves are not exceptions to this phenomenon.

These seemingly solid objects are more like ghostly images that we interpret as solid objects based on our perceptual conclusions.

From this we must conclude that Perception is some sort of a trick that helps us to take these ghostly images and turn them into a world we can associate and interact with. This clever device seems to be a creation of our intellect that enables us to interact with each other in what appears to be a three dimensional reality.

I hope that helps to answered your question.

It's a parallel to Plato's "Allegory of the Cave" from Republic.
See here: http://www.wsu.edu:8080/~wldciv/world_civ_reader/world_civ_reader_1/plato.html
Read it, and then watch the movie. The Matrix totally rips this story off! lol. But seriously, it displays the manipulation and individual perception of truth.

the obvious answer: the "brains-in-vats" discussion that began with descartes questioning everything - you know, "what if we're all brains in vats and don't know it" is how the line goes...

but my favorite issue came up during the second movie i believe -- when the council leader and neo are in the machinery level of the city and they discuss "control" and who is in control in their situation (given that they could just shut the machines off but then would be unable to breath or have heat or water..)
and the question translated to our lives is basically this: when we think we're in control, where is the illusion (because control is in some aspects always illusory)

The fact that man would rather choose to live in a fantasy world than the real one, out of fear and discomfort of what might be.

It reminds me of one of Nietzsche's letters to his sister,"If you want peace of mind, believe. If you want to be a disciple of truth...search."It's a matter of either clinging to a nice lie or being brave and seeing things how they really are. It's an existential situation. You realize that what you thought you built your life on wasn't even there.Like Sartre says,"There is no ground to sow."Now this doesn't mean you should be depressed. This means you should depend on yourself to give purpose to your life.
