It sounds like you might have a bark beetle problem. Bark beetles will not bite humans, but they may cause trouble for your trees in your backyard. Here is what you need to do.

1.Try to track down where your wood came from. It may come from an infected forest in Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado, or yes Arizona.

2. Bring the beetle your county extension office. They will be able to tell you what type of bark beetle that you have. If it is the local bark beetle it is not a bad as being infected with the Asian bark beetle.

3. Get rid of the infected wood. My a suggest inviting neighbors over for roasting marshmallows. That way no one else gets infected.

4. Keep an eye on your trees, especially your pines. Make sure that they have enough water this summer and enough nutrients. A healthy tree is a lot more likely to be able to fight off the bark beetles.

Good luck.

Many beetles burrow in wood, most beetles fly. A few can deliver nasty bites, but that isn't the main concern. You could be in for an infestation, especially if the wood came from another area. There is one going on now in the Eastern and Midwestern USA with the Emerald Ash Borer, which seems very likely to wipe out most if not all of the ash trees in the country. It's a good idea to call the Arizona Department of Natural Resources. Kirk Rowdabaugh, State Forester, has his phone number listed on the ADNR website (602) 771-1400, and that may be the best place to start. Have a specimen of one of the beetles (dead or alive) when you call him, and check what size and shape the hole is that they emerge from.

in all likelihood lengthy-horned beetles - Cerambycids. No beetle can sting you and they are going to purely chew in case you mishandle them - they don't opt for to have some thing to do with you. they are going to spend a three hundred and sixty 5 days of two feeding contained in the timber. in case you opt for to get rid of them, get rid of the timber.
