There is just one reason that splits into 2 parts.
Mummifying was done to preserve a body because eternal life was connected to the preservation of that body.
'We' don't believe that anymore....so we don't do that anymore. In connection with this it takes about 30 to 40 years for a grave to be consumed by the earth. This means that a grave is only 'leased' to the deceased for 50 years (depending on where you get buried) after that the plot gets reused by a more recently deceased.
Yes even burial grounds are recycled.
Of course there are exceptions but as a rule this is how it goes.

We do, kind of. We use modern chemicals to slow down the decomposition proses, and we do it in minutes. The Egyptian proses took over 70 days and most of this was in drying the body. So I guess that the simple answer is "Time and Money". Embalming fluid is much cheaper than half a ton of sodium nitrate and several gallons of palm wine, per person. Not to mention that most mummies are mummified as part of a religious preservation, to keep the souls house in tact, of one reason or other.

Just look up the procedure that the egyptians used to mummify and write about that, then the reasoning will answer for itself. It took the egyptians FOREVER to mummify someone, and they had to use a lot of different things to do it. Plus they did it for spiritual reasons, thinking that they had to preserve the bodies because thats the body they'll use after they die. HOWEVER, we know that is NOT the body, because the Bible tells us that after we die, our body returns to the dust of the earth, and our spirits go somewhere else (heaven or hell).

We do. It's called embalming.
Actually, it's because your religion doesn't believe that you need your body in the afterlife, as the Egyptians did. It was a religious practice, not a cultural practice. They also believed that if you erased their names, they would no longer exist in the afterlife. That's why the Pharaohs put their names on everything.
We only embalm people to preserve the body long enough for burial.
