Not so much as they over-achieved as they UNDER-achieved under Trammell's term at the helm.
Leyland will be very careful NOT to let what happened last year get to thier heads.
I think will the experience they got last year will only make them stronger. I do see Verlander not performing as well, but his 103 fastball will be dominant.
We have a decent pitching staff, and some decent offense so the chances are good they will make the play-offs.
How far they get is another story.

I'm a Met fan and I look at the Tigers with admiration. They have a strong, young starting rotation and hard throwers in the bullpen. I think the addition of Gary Sheffield will solidify that lineup and make the Tigers a formidable team again this season. They'll have pressure of course from the White Sox, Twins and Indians but none of these teams can out pitch the Tigers. Pitching is what wins ball games and the Tigers have it!

They definately have the talent and potential. If they are to win the division once again it's going to come down to basic teamwork. If they pull togeather and make every inning count and win, win, and win some more while playing divisional teams they will make it. By far the AL central is the toughest and most interesting division in baseball as any of them (excluding KC) are all possible contenders. At the end of the season I expect to see Cleveland and Detroit neck and neck with Minnesota right behind. With Chicago and KC lagging behind-this due to KC's positive and Chicago's negative offseason work. So pending no new high impact injuries, my prediction for when it's all said and done is:
Detroit
Cleveland (wild card)
Minnesota
Chicago
Kansas City

Such a tough division...so hard to tell, but with both the Sox and Yanks as formidable as they are this year it will be difficult for the Wild Card to come out of any other division but the AL East...so, assuming that, the Tigers would have to win the division and there are legitimately 4 teams that could win it, giving them a 25% chance, in which case I say it's not likely that they make it...
Best I can say before the season gets going...

I can't see them falling off from last years performance. They still have the best starting pitching staff in the league and they added Garry Sheffield to the lineup. What they need to do though is put Joel Zumaya in the closers role and give Todd Jones the boot, he is so shaky when he comes into the game in the ninth with only a 1,2 or 3 run lead.

Tiger fan born and raised. You know they are going to make the post season. Now that they've had a taste of the World Series, they're going to go for it again. Feels good to have a winning baseball team again! Now if only we could motivate the Lions!

Yes, they will make the playoffs again this year. Last year was no fluke, unlike the White Sox the year before. The Tigers are for real, and they will prove it again this season.

I don't think they over achieved at all. With a healthy Sheffield in the lineup, they'll be even better. They play in a tough division, but if their pitchers stay healthy, they should repeat.

Maybe we will see if they still have fuel in their tank. They might have burned out last year. They still have some great players.
