I need to test out of English 101 so I can take a higher English class, but I want to know what basic topics I should study before the exam to be prepared.

The first English class is always boring, especially if you are a decent writer. When I took English 1 (same has 101, number depends on the university), we had several books we had to read and write about. Make sure you have broken away from high school 5 paragraph essays because that doesn't fly in college. We also had to do an analytical type essay and a research paper. Besides talking about the reading we did, we also covered basic grammar and writing techniques. I believe most professors or TAs will add a peer review type element to the class where you learn from others and learn to edit and review the writing of classmates.

Little did I know my college entrance/competency exam score, my SAT score and my high school GPA waived me from taking English 1. I guess I just took it for the experience.

If you google "College English 101" you will get samples of syllabus(es?) used by different Universities.

Good luck!
