Stopping poverty is a generational problem. In the US, we can break the cycle by restoring value to public education, raising the literacy rate, and paying the working poor a living wage (not a minimum wage) to make sure their families are supported.
Ending poverty in poor parts of the world is a much more complicated problem. Governments need stability and to be free of corruption. Then they can start investing the basic infrastructure like roads, sewers, and small industries that raise their GDP. In some cases, wealthier countries need to provide some aid, and in other cases, no amount of aid will help until the corruption problem is beaten.

You can't stop poverty. Somebody will always be poorer than somebody else and they will be considered in poverty, no matter how much money they have! It is a relative thing. All you can do is hope to raise up the level of life for those less fortunate than you. Teach them to better themselves and show them how to do it. Provide them with the opportunity to get an education. You can't take them all home! Education is the answer. They get it or they lose. It sounds cold, but what can you do? There are jobs for those that want one. They have to make the effort to eat and pay bills. Too much is given and not appreciated. If they work for it, they will have self respect and appreciate what they do have. Hard work will pay off in the long run.

Educate......Teach money handling at an early age, work with those families who live on welfare to help their children break the cycle... Better education - make sure NO kids fall between the cracks, adult education classes on handling money (free), adult education on the importance of your credit report, control the premiums for health insurance, more community involvement, peer mentoring in poverty areas so that those kids see a real life example of success (WHO IS NOT AN ATHLETE), restrictions on credit card companies to prevent abuse. Many, many more education and training programs that are free or run on a voluntary basis. Instead of (or in conjunction with) giving your money, give your time and skills to train, educate and mentor.
In short you can give a family a fish dinner and feed them for a night OR you can teach them how to fish and feed them for life.

Find ways to transition socialist states to capitalist. I was watching this documentary set in mexico where the locals were all upset that the state wanted to build an airport which would relocate some farmers. If the locals can't fundamentally understand the need for transport as a means of expanding their economy and protest and burn and shoot to block it - they have sealed not only their own misery but future misery of their offspring and on down the line.

I don't think you can stop poverty completely but you can do things to reduce it.You can probably reduce it in developing counties by building an infrastructure that can be used by industry to sustain itself. Many countries don't even have basic services like clean water or widespread electricity.

Give to charity is one idea, not to be confused with government charity i.e. welfare which is a terrible idea to force people to give!
Secure the borders and put lazy welfare recipients to work!
The sad thing is a lot of people in poverty are to dumb or unmotivated to lift themselves out of it! As the saying goes, you can bring a horse to water, but can't make him drink!

Poverty can't be stopped so don't try.
Don't be naive.
Poor people are a necessity, just like rich.
What you can do though is help poor people.
