Picnicing in a cemetary, and having an alter with animal skulls for the Day of the Dead. Normal or not?

I don't want to be a biggot, I just want your opinion, and how you celebrate this holiday if you don't mind.

slave of 12 Gods you don't know me, and I forgive you for getting the wrong impression regarding my question.

I merely want to know if using animal skulls, alters and picnicing in a cemetary are things normally done to celebrate the day of the dead.

The Day of the Dead is like a hispanic version of Halloween, only with heavy catholism influence involved. Most mexicans don't celebrate this holiday, as for picnicing in a cemetary, its not usual , people do not eat at the cemetary, they might leave something special; like their loved ones favorite piece of candy or food and decorate the graves with marigold flowers. Most of the food ordeal if any is placed on altars in the family's home. In general the more elaborate cultural traditions pertain to only a particular region of Mexico. (D.F) the capital of mexico. The rest of the country is not as involved. As for using animal skulls, uhhh not really, unless ofcourse the person they are remembering had a thing for animal skulls. Real skeletons are not used, but sugar skulls and skeleton shaped candy are made. I knew about this holiday , but I heard more about it from my art class in Texas, not from my family.
Its kinda like Cinco de Mayo. Mexicans don't really celebrate it, but the way it's protrayed gives the assumption that they do .

The best answer that you will find is in a book written by a mexican: Octavio Paz, the name of the book is El Laberinto de la Soledad. I saw it in English one day when I visited Vancouver.
In this book he explains why unlike other cultures mexicans celebrate death in a different way.
Anglosaxons cultures don´t speak about dath, or evil, (like in Harry Potter that they try to don´t mention the name of the villain) because they think that this will attract death or evil.
But mexicans make a big party, celebrate, laugh and make a mock about it. They make a communion with death. They don´t fear death and also they miss so much to their death relatives that go to the cemetery and bring bread, candies and many stuff to honor their deaths and have lunch with them. They talk about death
They just see death in a different and not terrible way.
If you read the book, that has also some other essays you will have some other answers also.
I wish you could see it, It´s a big party with family and friends.
Outside the cementery they sell all kind of food and flowers.
Sometimes there are some accidents, because the yard may have some holes and the next day you read it in the newspaper.

Mexicans Your Opinions?
my opinion of the Mexican one ... good we for customs, of many long years, is tradition to do it every year, to be with whom they have gone away to another world ... always, they take flowers, get ready godforsaken graves, even, if any nearby grave, nobody arranges it or visits it, our people show his compassion, arranging his grave, putting a flower, or a sail ... if to the deceased or he liked deceased person the music, or a song in particular, there is sung he, an hour or perhaps if she was a very dear person, for his relatives, and friends, they touch music, during the day ... it is not strange at all, they are our traditions, and our customs ... very ours ... very Mexican which makes myself happy, about that you ask, and this way is a pleasure to answer, on things of my country. that's why, in this country, it uses. there is a lot of prejudice and error about us; as the one that says that we must speak English alone, because we live here, I agree, only that the attitude, xenophobic that they have seems to me... it seems to me exaggerated, but in this country thanks to god the freedom of expression exists and it is that's why him every who has his opinion about what they want to think, fortunately, also there are wicks persons who meet us as we are, also they know that we are the people that we come to work, and this is the opinion that it counts ... thank you Alex Atlanta GA.USA

You should research Day of the Dead a little more. It's pretty fascinating stuff. Better than the "In Memory of..." bumper stickers white people use. That's tasteless

Personally I don't know anything about the Mexican culture but I am a very tolerant person and as long as their actions do not affect others or myself I believe they are entitled to their beliefs.
