Also, I have had dreams before when i am in a very scary situation/nightmare, and i know im dreaming, and SO badly want to wake up but can't-- it's really weird b.c i keep say "this is a dream wake up" but it's so hard to pull myself out of it-- can anyone offer an explanation about any of this? THANKS =)

If you like to read
and you like books about dreaming then
the book "in source" is a great book to help you understand dreams and how they come about.

It is not a book that helps you determine your dreams but why you have them and how to control them if you choose.

It explains how you can also get into another's dreams and the ettiquette in doing so.

This book is a paperback and costs about $12.00.

enjoy, it opened my eyes

oh p.s. I used to have the dreams you are referring to and it used to scare the #### out of me. I also would try to tell myself to get up and even try to move myself to wake up. I was aware of my surroundings and I could even hear others in my home. However, I really could not realize what they were saying. I also did hit the ground once but it was about exact same time I awoke so I don't know if the "if you hit the ground before you wake up in your dream then you die" is real or not.

Lucid dreaming is when you realize you are dreaming. You are then often able to control the dream, creating your own reality. It is a lot of fun! It is not always easy to stay lucid in a dream, you tend to either wake up or fall back into a regular dream.

As far as being "stuck" in a dream, I have had the same kind of experience. I have said things loudly like "In the name of God I command this dream to end!" and then it will end.

If you wake up, but are unable to move, you are experiencing sleep paralysis. This is when the body thinks you are asleep, but the mind is awake. It can be scary, but is harmless.

Lucid dreaming is literally that, you are "lucid", or at least more aware of your dreams. I don't agree that you necessarily have control over your dreams. I had them for years and they occured when my sleep was interupted. Sleep paralysis occurs when you fall back to sleep, but not entirely. So your dreaming mechanism is open but you can't control your body yet.
Recording your dreams gives you the tools and habits to stay lucid while dreaming so you can affect their outcome. This may help you if you are having bad dreams due to stress, PTSD and/or other negative feelings in your waking world.

thats so funny cuz i just posted a question about the same thing. i cant seem to wake up also. and its realy scarey when u have a scarey dream and ur stuck in that dream. its like at the end you know u are dreaming and u try to wake up and u cant. i just learned its called sleep paralysis. u gotta look it up and read about it. its pretty interesting. It dont seem to be dangerous unless u stop breathing in ur sleep and cant seem to wake up then. If u believe in more spiritual things ive also been told it can be an Out of body experiance.

It's when you control your dream.

When I was younger and had nightmares, I also knew I was just dreaming. This sounds stupid, I know, but what I did was reach up and pull my eyelids open. Do it in the dream and really concentrate on it...I'd do it real life at the same time, and wake myself up.

It's worth a try.

Good luck.
