It's about a community that is controlled by the government. They tell the people how to dress/act/think/talk, etc. There is even a special pill the people take so they can't feel anything; pain, pleasure, happiness, hurt, sickness, etc.

My students had to read this book The Giver in summer school. The lead character is Jonah. This book was about living in a society where everything from the number of children you have to how old your are when you die is predetermined. Jonah spent some time in the book trying to prevent a baby who was not progressing fast enough from being murdered by members of society. I can't remember what happened in the end but I think Jonah rode his bike to a normal society. It was kind of scary to me.
