It depends on the plant.
A good rule of thumb is to allow at least enough room to walk down the rows without compacting the dirt around the plants. You should never have to reach more than 4 feet to weed or prune so make sure you have enough room between rows where you can reach without leaning and where you dont have to walk close to the plants. I plant one crop and if I want two rows, I leave 12 inches between the two rows. Howevr, my major paths through the garden are three feet wide.

That depends on how much land you have. If you have the space make the row wider than A wheel barrow. That way if you should need to use one you have the space.. If you are cramped for space or would not need to bring a wheel barrow down the path I would say 24 inches would be good.

I leave a wheelbarrow width in case I need to get in there to haul stuff, or in case I need to use it as a path to someplace else in the garden.
