Is it time to give the UN some real power to deal with international disputes.?

I envision a powerful UN, with a strong leader, backed by a 5 million man UN Army.

How can the UN solve problems...if it doesn't have real power?

Well, the neoconservatives would rather hamstring the UN so it cannot do anything and then point out that it cannot do anything to support their desire to dominate the world.

What are you talking about? We and and couple of hundred other countries ARE the UN (6 on the security council if you want to talk about the real players). The Un is not an individual entity, nor should it be. It is supposed to be a forum of collaboration not a body of world policing. The UN will neverr again be powerful if the countries that make it up are bargaining with only their reconomic interests in mind. Nor will they succeed if they have leader who is blinded by a policy excruciating diplomacy.

The UN peacekeeping unit is a joke. On the other hand, they are also a problem. They've gone into 3rd countries and have committed crimes there such as rape, theft and murder. The problem itself isn't the UN having a peacekeeping army. The problem is where they get the soldiers from. Many of them are from 3rd world countries and don't act too sympathetic in other countries. I think the UN Army needs to be rethought about what it's mission is and rethought through about where they get their troops from. Then we'll talk about 'real' pwer to deal with international disputes. BTW, I don't think more military in any situation is a good thing. We need to learn to find ways of settling disputes without force except in times of real and dire need.

I believe more in the "Seperation of Powers" rather than the consolidation of power.

There IS way too much corruption going on in this world!

Who could be trusted with such power?
And even if there was such a person...who would be in control after them?

I think the Founding Fathers idea to have checks and balances and also to seperate the powers is an excellent idea....and even WITH that setup in our government...IN SPITE of the precaution built into our government we can STILL see abuses of government power! And It would be much worse I believe ...without those checks and balances.

In summary: SEPERATE THE POWERS!!!

if there was a 5 million man UN army, the US would provide 4.8 million of those troops. Not worth it. The UN should be scrapped. THey do nothing but cost the US money.
We should force them to pay back their parking tickets. That'd set them back years.

Somebody above me nailed it. In theory, that sounds good. In practice, if we made that possible you can bet your last Dollar that 4.9 of the 5 million would be U.S. troops, and that wouldn't change very much.

So yes, it's long PAST time, but I don't know what I would do. And it doesn't, and it can't. And until the most powerful Nation in the world learns to stop acting so Narcissistic and realizes EVERYONE in the World has HUMAN RIGHTS, don't expect that to change.

how can it solve problems at all. It is a huge waste of taxpayer money in my opinion. It is a nice idea but some people wont listen to peace talks. they go to NYC to hear about how they dont like each other then leave, leaving US. thier hotel bills.
