I'm not gay so I don't know if it's true but wouldn't they want to get married for mainly the same reason a straight person want to get married. It's a way to finalize being together forever even though it's a 50% divorce rate in America. People want that and they want that commitment. States ban it because it's against their culture. Laws says that religion should not conflict with politics but religion can be a big part of a person. In many religions, gays are shun and hated because they are wrong doers or sons of the devils. It's a belief people grew up with and still live by. It's not that they are stupid or narrow minded, it's what life is like for them and when things one way people like it to remain so.

The same benefits that any couple getting married gets. The main one being the idea of committment and knowing that the person you love, loves you back. Then there are economic benefits like social security and income taxes and survivor benefits and visitation rights at hospitals.

As to why some states ban it? Almost always it is to score political points with extremist religious groups.

The only reasons for me are financial. I don't really need some strangers to recognize my relationship. But it is bothersome that I pay into SSI and if I die before my partner, he can not collect on that. Also, passing real estate between us. The other stuff I have been able to deal with, by using a very good lawyer.

I could give you the entire list of over 1,100 rights, priveledges and protections that LEGAL MARRIAGE provides to couples that are being denied to same-sex couples. But instead I'll just give you the link to where it's all spelled out for you.

Oh, and we're talking LEGAL rights, priveledges and protections. Not some archaic religious dogma.

What religious groups WANT you to be ignorant of is the fact that Marriage is NOT a religious institution in this country.
We allow Rapists to legally marry
We allow Murderers to Legally marry
We allow theives and tax evaders to legally marry
We allow violent criminals, sex criminals, child molesters, abusive people and neglective parents to legally marry.
WE even ALLOW ATHEISTS TO LEGALLY MARRY!
All because marriage is a LEGAL CONTRACT!

Religious dogma has NOTHING to do with it in this country!

properly u . s . does no longer have separate yet equivalent rights. It one for all and desirous about one. The gays like me opt for those rights because others have them. and that i no extra opt for to visit south Africa to get married than a Blake individual needs to visit Canada to sit interior the font of a bus. some human beings opt for a separate form of marriage calle civil unions which supposedily could grant an same rights yet make heterosexuals married and gays unionized or some thing....

I don't expect any advantages, I just would like to be able to get married and adopt children. o.o; I guess I'm sort of old-fashioned, though, seeing as nowadays most kids want to run around banging everything they see and have children with no sense of commitment whatsoever. * shrugs *

Equal rights to children.
Tax exemptions.
Being able to see their spouse in the hospital if it's a 'family only' situation.
Having the medical power of attorney in their name.
Being equal to every other human.
