Hey everyone... i need help with this question:

In the circuit (see link), the current I1 is 3.0 A while the values of E and R are unknown. What are the currents I2 and I3?

Solving this problem requires taking care with sign convention.

I will assume that a positive voltage has current flowing from the positive to the negative terminal in a resistor.

First, the voltage across R1 can be computed as
6*3=18V

Now, sum the voltages around the 24v, R1 and R2 resistor loop:

24=18-v2
v2=-6V

so I2 =-2A

Sum the currents coming into the node below R2

-2+3-I3=0
I3=1A
