Napoleon put an end to the destruction of the French Revolution, and defeated France's external enemies, allowing France to seal the end of the ancien regime. Napoleon was an able administrator bringing in his 'Code Napoleon'.

But Napoleon also hindered the revolution - his wars against Russia and Britain were costly = both economically and in terms of the lives of French troops, being defeated at Waterloo, the allies installed King Louis XVIII - the brother of beheaded French king Louis XVI.

Napoleon played a crucial part in the development of modern day france.
