In hte begining, they will only do a routine pap test and the blood work was more than likely just to check your HCG level in your blood, which is the pregnancy hormone. How high this hormone is also detects how pregnant you are. Later on in your pregnancy, (I wanna say somewhere around 14 weeks or so) they will do a lot more blood tests, and search for things such as HIV and AIDS, Rubella, blood sugar levels, and other routine things that might put your baby at risk. Somewhere around that time, you will also be given the option of doing alpha-fetal protein testing, which is an amniocentesis that can detect if there are any birth defects or genetic abnormalities. The only bad thing about this test is (and I don't recommend getting it because there is a 60% chance of having a false positive) that it can be risky and can cause miscarriage. Near the end of your pregnancy, you will also be tested for something called Beta-Strep. You should read up on that. If you test positive for that, then they will have to give you intervenious pennecillin during your labor. Oh, soon, you will probably have a glueclose test as well. That's not a big deal. You just have to drink this nasty stuff and come back in an hour and they check your blood sugar. Hope all this helps!

The pap is to determine if your cervix is fully closed and normal. The blood test is to check for hcg hormone. It is just standard practice. Mainly because some insurance companies require a positive blood pregnancy test over a urine one. Good luck with the pregnancy, I hope all goes well.
