You should be cautious around people who don't like you, they are the most likely people to hit your crotch. You should be careful around guy friends who think "sack taps" and such are funny. You should steer clear of girls who think crotch attacks are acceptable ways of communicating thier anger towards men.

Aside from staying away from these certain people, you could buy a padded jockstrap (this is just a jock with a little extra padding, which can soften a blow to the groin). Or you could buy a jockstrap and hard cup.

My advice: don't live in fear. If it happens, you can deal with the pain. If the attacker goes overboard, you can always press charges.

What everyone else said, or you can train to withstand an attack.
Have someone kick you in your crotch once a day until you build a tolerance against an attack.

you can wear a cup all the time but thats a little weird, you can be more cautious, gain enough weight to the point that your stomach hangs over your crotch for protection, or just get new friends

there isn't a whole lot one can do to prevent such an attack..
perhaps it would be best to go on the offensive..
I would if someone was gonna polish my family jewels..

remember the testicles aren't the only vunerible parts of the body...eyes/knees/belly/neck also make great targets

an athletic cup might help..but will look funny in your pants..especially if you walk around with it all day long.

Always be ready. Watch for people you think might try to hit you, because it is usually only a few people who keeep trying. You could always wear a cup, but that could be awkward. Your best bet is to just keep an eye out when you are suspicious.
