I can remember my sister's first day of school in September 1976. I can remember my first day of school in September 1977. But I remember nothing of Elvis' death in August 1977. In fact, until well into the 1980's, I assumed Elvis had died in the 60's, and I remember being surprised to learn he had died in 1977.

Isn't childhood memory development weird?

Very normal. I don't know how old you were, but like someone said, it just didn't apply to your life at the time. Maybe your weren't an Elvis fan (Sorry, as an Elvis fan, it kills me to say this, but...) you just didn't care and so it didn't stick in your memory. Next to Elvis, I am a huge Dean Martin fan. Put me on a deserted island with nothing, but Elvis and Dean Martin and I'm good. :) Anyway, I got into Dean Martin 7, 8, 9 years ago, something like that. I was 14 when he died and I don't remember hearing anything about it. I wasn't a fan then, I had other things in my life that were more important at the time. Looking at me know, you'd think I was a Dean Martin fan my whole life. I've been an Elvis fan my whole life (I'm 25), but I only got into Dean Martin a little less than 10 years ago.

Yes! Memory is a weird thing. I can remember certain things, while others I cannot. It would be nice to have access to the other 90% of the brain that is said not to be currently used according to a number of brain scientists! It would also be nice if we could come up with some kind of micro chip to speed up memory and thought processes like in computers! Of course, this is my opinion- some people may disagree, but I sure would like to absorb as much knowledge as I could and remember everything. If you had the ability to remember everything, then you could gain intelligence and wisdom in amazing ways and you would be able to tell when people are trying to "pull a fast one" on you!

you have probably heard of his death in 1977 but since you were a child you might not had bothered your self with it. some childhood experiences, memories or info. are beng kept in the unconscious level. you cant retrieve back that easily unless your unconscious were tapped. if these memories aren't surfaced to the conscious level. the concious level can always create such assumption or replacement to such thought. you are bothered now so it means that there is certainly a memory of elvis' death in your unconscious otherwise if there had not been, you wont feel weird at all.

Your memory is very normal. You remember those things that brought drama to your life. Now, if Elvis had been a close relative and you attended his funeral you would of remembered.
I didn't remember when Elvis died either. But I do remember putting my oldest child on the school bus for the first time. It was a very traumatic event for both of us, or at least me. (Ha! Ha!)

You only attend to what is important to you, especially as a child. Also, I am sure that your parents did not inundate you with the demise of an overweight drug hound, regardless of his singing greatness. Why would any 5 year old remember that. I hope it is because your parents protected you from the nature of the world at that young an age.

You may have been sheltered from the out side world. Stop and think of anything you can remember other then happenings in your house hold.

Most people seem to be more self-centered during their early childhood. It simply did not apply to your life at the time. I didn't know a lot of important events that happened during my early childhood. I learned about them later.

Children are very self-centered. Not that that's a bad thing -- this is the time when they are learning about themselves and what they can do.
